I’m not sure if this would be possible and I understand if it’s way too much work, but I was helping proofread a story and thought the ability to edit but not fully change things permanently would be helpful, similarly to how people use word or google docs to edit a document with suggestions. The ability to add small comments about sections that need clarification and/or changes would be great too. If it would just be easier for authors to share stories in other programs for revisions instead, though, I’d completely understand!
My other idea (which could be a lot simpler!) is adding a “revision notes” tab to the edit section of a story where you can keep a running list of suggestions for the person you’re doing revisions for, or notes for yourself if needed.
This is actually why there are revisions. If you hand out the “secret” edit link (it’s shown at the top in the author’s panel) to any person, they can use that to edit your text - but if they save it, it will only create a new revision. Your original text will remain unchanged.
You can then look at the revision and check out the changes they’ve made. You can use the “eye” icon (right next to the handles for revisions) to turn on the highlighting of all changes made.
That definitely clears it up, thank you! I had never tried revising before because I didn’t want to make changes to the story without checking with the author first, so I didn’t see what it looked like.
Is there a way to leave a comment when you make a revision? There are some things in the story I think could be reworked by the author for clarity that I think would be nice to write in a comment as a suggestion rather than gutting the story to adjust it.
