Hey all— I’ve recently been interested in reading classic literature that includes forms of hypnosis, mind control, and mesmerism. I’ve been reading Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and it made me curious of other classic books that include similar themes. I remember there are many of you that have a background in literature, so if anyone has good recommendations, I’d love to hear them! Even just recommendations of classic literature in general!
I want to get into reading more.
Well, here’s me returning the favor. One book that I have just started reading that falls into this topic is Jack O’Neill’s Land Under England. If you want a scholarly work that covers the field of literature, then you want to look at David Seed’s Brainwashing: The Fictions of Mind Control. I started reading it a while back, but got pulled away into other works. But he covers the fictions of the Cold War period, so works like The Manchurian Candidate are where his interest lies. If you’re interested in the history of hypnosis, then I’ll offer up Robin Waterfield’s Hidden Depths: The Story of Hypnosis, which traces how hypnosis came into being and evolved over the centuries. So there’s some works to get you started.
