Safe Mode blocking me even though I am logged in

I am trying to access Part 1 of “The Birthday Toast” but even though I am logged into the site, and nothing else seems to be blocked, I am getting the Safe Mode message on the first page of the story - and cannot read it. I do not think I have any tags blocked, so it can’t be anything to do with that. When I check my login, it confirms that I am logged in but when I return to the story I find it is still blocked.

Ok, you’re the second person to report such a thing, so I there must be something wrong.

I’ll check it out right away. Thanks for notifying me!

Thanks very much

It’s strange, I’ve tried it with a test user myself, and it works fine.

I’ve confirmed that the Safe Mode is turned off in your account.

Please make sure that you reload the page. It can be read from your browser cache. On the PC just press Ctrl-F5 or Ctrl-Shift-R. On a mobile phone, try to “pull down” the screen to force a reload, or you might have to delete the whole cache of your phone’s browser.

Thanks very much. I can see it now. I’m not quite sure what I did, but it’s OK now.

This is also happening to me!

Same tip: Make sure that you’re not fooled by the browser’s cache. Press Ctrl-F5 or clear the cache.

Also double check if you’re really logged on.

Ok, since this problem just started recently, I recapitulated what I changed in the last weeks. Then it occurred to me: One of the measurements to defend against the recent attacks would have caused this.

I had enabled caching for the story page, not considering that this would affect people turning off the safe mode.

I’ve just rolled out a fix for that. But for people who have a story page in their cache, it will take 24 hours (the cache lifetime) to fix itself. Or they have to explicitly reload.

So, sorry for that.

And thank you for reporting it! Otherwise this would have gone unnoticed!
