Save often. Manually

Because it was so painfully reminded to me recently, never assume your autosave is still running smoothly after a software update.

Yowch. I’m sorry to hear that dude. I hope your (forced) second draft exceeds the first.

Yeah, almost all the kids of today have forgotten this lesson that was painfully flogged into us oldies by Sierra and Infocom!

I can only agree wholeheartedly that it’s a terrible feeling when hours of brain crunch just go “poof” in a second. It’ll still feel like second best with whatever you have to rewrite afterwards :face_exhaling: I try to keep up with the old school habit of hitting save almost every time I stop to think about the next bit, regardless of Auto-save or not.

Bam. Google Docs.

I can’t recommend them enough. Automatic, live cloud saving as you type.

If after 10 hours of writing my PC breaks and my Hard disc frisbees itself out the side of its casing. I won’t even lose the last sentence I typed, AND, it’s all on the cloud by default.

I also recommend Google docs, but be aware that this is one of their policies.

Do not distribute content that contains sexually explicit material, such as nudity, graphic sex acts, and pornographic material. This includes driving traffic to commercial pornography sites. We allow nudity for educational, documentary, scientific, or artistic purposes.

From this, it sounds like it’s probably totally fine just to use it for writing, but if you include links/images to porn and/or share it with others via Google (e.g. for proofreading and general sharing), you might be crossing a line. I almost guarantee Google is not monitoring this and you are fine, but just think people should be aware. I also use Google docs for all my stories.

this is a policy specifically for Google Docs!?

Yeah: https://support.google.com/docs/answer/148505#zippy=

It says similar stuff about excessively gory things intended to scare, and child stuff. But it’s important to note which ones say “do not distribute” vs “do not store or distribute”. And also some of them apply only to images or videos. For sexually explicit content (which I think includes pure text), it just says to not use it to distribute.
