Good Story (or, Chapter) Length?

What do you think is a good length for stories? Or, chapters of stories? I admit that I tend to go for the green or blue, <~6k words or so. My most recent story is 11.5k words, though, and I was trying to figure out if I should’ve broken it up to get more readership.

To validate that thought or reject it, I thought I’d ask: What do you folks think is a good length for a story chapter - AKA, one click and one page load?

I think it depends on your writing style and how you break up your story. For me, when I wrote my first story recently, I tended to do one big “climax” scene per chapter, and I always got there between 1,500 and 2,500 words. If you’re a writer who does a 1-shot in a single chapter and can pace things well throughout, I’d say the length you mentioned is fine.

I’m someone who will read any length of story as long as it’s well-written and interesting, so the length of a chapter doesn’t really matter to me. If it’s too long, I’ll just bookmark it and come back when I want to read more. The only story that would give me pause would be a 1-chapter story with over 40,000 words— I’d probably prefer if that was broken up into 10,000 word chapters but some people might enjoy reading a full story like that on the site.

You’re like a good number of authors on this site who try to stay around the 5K limit. 5K is about 10-12 pages in Word and 10K is about 22-24. So most people lean toward writing short chapters of a book; others are writing article length chapters. One of my friends who hasn’t written in a while used to write 1500 words. He was really focusing on word choice but he really would produce some amazing work. While I’m not a fan of the 10-11K length word, if you story has to go that long, there’s no problem with that. Go where the story takes you should be the first rule.
