Poll: How should authors post multiple endings?

I’m writing a story with multiple endings, and I’m curious about the communities perspective. Note that the outcome of the poll will probably not dictate how I release the ending of my story, but I am curious.

When reading a story with multiple endings, how would you prefer the author post the multiple final chapters?

  • Publish any of the endings as soon as it is ready/written
  • All at once, after all endings are written
  • Thematically (Worst Ending → Best, or Happiest → Darkest)
  • The ending I would enjoy most first, then the rest (I’ll be sure to tell the author in the comments of his story which ending to write)

I’m probably in the minority but I’m not really a fan of multiple endings (exception is Slut Brand by Nu). I prefer it when the author just gives his all with a single ending. It’s more satisfying to me than having multiple what-if endings. But, like I said, I’m probably the minority.

I think they are a fun feature, but should be used sparingly. In my humble opinion, multiple endings are best when you have a specific choice you want to explore and show the fallout, ramifications, and unintended consequences of that choice.

I don’t think they are appropriate for every story, and I think they could actively detract from some stories. But in certain circumstances, I think they are a good storytelling tool. After all, Marvel has had ‘What-If’ comics for more than 60 years.
