I’ve been increasingly interested in starting up a Ko-fi or another Patreon-like subscription with some of my unreleased stuff, 2.0 versions of older stories (like Re-Educator) and short little one offs that would help me work on my writing skills (and learning how to do a short story without fifty thousand chapters, haha)
I guess I was seeking both advice from authors that have done this and seeing interest in possible subscribers to my stuff. I’d still release stuff here, obviously, for free, but just to put out more behind the scenes stuff, exclusive shorter stories, and revamped versions perhaps. I’m just not sure about the upkeep or stress those that have done this experience and want to ensure I’m able to provide something that would be beneficial for fans while also not, like, creating overwhelming stress for myself.
I don’t have experience in running or subscribing to a paid subscription account, so I can’t offer much from an operating perspective. The overall idea sounds good, a bit like your treasure chest with the extra bits. But you’ll just have to think it through how you would execute the plan and the upkeep of it over time.
Just based on the perspective of a potential subscriber looking in from the side, you might want to be mindful that, as a paid subscription, I’d think that the subscribers might have a certain level of expectation in terms of the contents, or perhaps also how often or regularly new contents would be published. That in turn might put pressure on yourself as it would now become a commitment from you to keep your subscribers satisfied, or at least feel that their money was well spent. It might not be as free and flexible as it is on here, where you can totally publish at your own pace.
I’m not trying to discourage you, just sharing a thought from a potential user perspective. Whatever your ultimate plan might be, I hope you’ll be successful!
To the point above, really as long as you set expectations on what you are offering at various tier levels and largely abided by it (circumstances always happen) then that’s all that matters.
Very real. In many ways, this is a way to keep me accountable. I def plan on writing much smaller bitesize one offs/shorter continued stories. But do believe with the incentive of payments, I’d be more apt to continue other long delayed stories. I’d been working on a commission for a fan for a while now, and the payments really inspired me to keep going…I’m thinking this would do the same!
Indeed. It could be pressure or motivation depending on how you take it. If it can allow us to get regular updates from your work, I cannot say yes enough to it then!
Sadly no still same weird redirecting to your page when you click it. If it helps, when you see that post it still has a lock icon next to it where the others show as unlocked.
I still have the same issues opening. Can see the 4 new posts but they just take you back to your profile. There is a lock icon next to them (whereas the posts people can access have a lock and arrow (e.g. wishes fulfilled).
