To my fellow authors; how dependent are you on interaction/feedback to continue writing stories?

Is this where I shamelessly plug my own story?

Oh gentlemen I like that.

I would be lying if I said I never thought or wondered about who jacks off to my stories  :joy:

… Other than myself of course…

Yes, that thought is very satisfying and arousing. It’s the same for me. I just wish I could see all the guys wanking to the stories … (a little creepy, I know, it’s just a fantasy…)

I write the stories I want to tell. I don’t ‘write to market’ or follow trends. I also don’t have a writing schedule, since I work anywhere from 40 to 60 hours a week. While I (mostly) love and (mostly) appreciate the comments, interaction, and feedback, they’re not a motivating factor for me to continue.

incredibly dependent. kind words, even a simple “good job!” really give me enthusiasm for continuing to write. otherwise, it’s like speaking to a blank wall. the “number of reads” stats don’t mean a lot for me. especially considering the burden of posting a comment is so low, it’s always welcome to hear mens’ reactions.

I love getting comments – for me, it’s part of the fun. Good or bad, it’s a joy to interact. Since I’ve moved mostly to self-publishing, feedback and reviews are RARE, so I try to cherish what I get.

That said, I don’t take anything personally.

A lot. Comments encourage me to write and give me really nice feedback. Unfortunately, although my stories usually get good ratings and visits and favs ratios, they don’t usually get many comments :frowning:
I love getting comments, and I often revisit comments people have made in the past on my published stories to read them again with fondness. Comments really are a nice reward after a long time of work and effort writing and looking for the best way to describe what you want to convey or the scene you want to paint in the reader’s mind, which in my case is a lot of effort since my stories tend to be very long and descriptive.
I guess I tend to write for a very specific niche and that’s why I don’t get as many comments as I would like.

I feel exactly the same. Even very short comments are much more valuable than ratings. Those comments are my main reward, and have been since I received them at my anonymous e-mail in the mid-nineties. Favs ratios is the second level of reward, people who loved my stories enough to want to go back to them often. It also provides a good metric to compare my stories with one another, knowing which ones were received better. I just spent several hours yesterday carefully editing my next story, reducing 9000 words to 6000, to tighten it up. That’s a lot of work just for one aspect. When you get low comments, it really hits hard in the “why am I doing this?”. Sure, I don’t think I could stop writing, but it slows down my output significantly.

As for ratings, I don’t get enough for them to mean anything. The most important factors for those ratings are outside my control, and not related to the story or my skills at all, I discovered. Now I treat them more like a lottery: if I’m lucky enough that the story is ignored by those people who love to sink ratings (and it only takes one or two to get you out of the game), then I might get a badge or two. But when I see it’s hopeless, I change that story to no ratings for my peace of mind. Maybe if you get dozens of ratings they average to something useful, but with less than 30-40, it’s just sheer luck and not meaningful.

I got the most comments I’ve ever gotten in my new story and it made me feel so feakin’ good. It is so nice when people take the time to comment!

Exactly that. Just seeing the notification in my inbox “hey! there’s a new comment!” makes my day.
Writing is a lot harder than people usually think, and it takes a lot of time… not to mention the time you spend editing and polishing the final result, or being stuck on a paragraph thinking how to continue or how to elaborate on what you want to say. So it’s great when someone takes a little time to say “hey, this was great, keep it up :)” or something like that. Personally I tend to reply to almost every comment that is written on my stories because it really makes me happy to receive them. And when it happens that a story that you put a lot of effort into ends up not getting any comments, it’s pretty depressing, nothing I’m not used to, but it’s not ideal.

And yeah, feels freaking good.

I definitely like it.

It saved my current story. Made me go back and do it right.

Plus have gotten some nice comments. Hard work is always easier to keep doing if you are getting positive feedback!
