Werewolves: Worship or Weary? Discussion on WW Erotica

Greetings, gents. Starting a thread to discuss werewolf erotica on GSS. I have an enduring fascination with werewolves dating back to childhood. It’s now fused with my love of gay erotic fiction. At the same time, a lot of guys express aversion or weariness about the genre. Eager to provide a forum here (with the good graces of GSS) for fans to discuss the genre, and for helpful critiques from those are not fans (I’m eager to understand why werewolves in particular are not popular with some, but there is not the same level of aversion for vampires, ghosts, and other enduring characters of horror).

This will also be a forum to get thoughts / feedback on my werewolf series Mondjugen (now on my second novella).

Looking forward to talking. Take care.

Well, lemme have a go at silly erotica psychoanalysis.

Ever since the dawn of time (or at least the 90s in America), a single question arose that went unanswered to this very day…

Is Furry inherently a homoerotic medium?

I myself can confidently answer that auch is not the case. Furry is a term used to describe an interest andromorphic stylistic representation of animals that can be both sexual and non-sexual.
Even sexual depiction of furries is not limited to the male on male variety.

Still, back in the era, furries did not have the best of reputation. The concept has been so intrinsicly tied to the concept of bestiality, and thus there exists an attempt by the Gay community, whose major priortiy at the time was to earn validation from the society at large, to distance itself away from Furries as much as possible.

Luckily, the world is not so narrowminded today, but I think the past separation between the Gay community and the Furries community still attests to the fact that Furries is a niche interest thaf can be a subset of many cultures, but not in anyway indicative of that entire culture. However, the furry subculture also happens to intersect with another subculture, which is mind control and hypnosis, both being minor subcultures shared by relatively few people. I dont think it is strange that such two small subcultures would start to merge because they understood how lonely it was to have such a niche interest…

And from the union between the two, the Furry Transformation genre was born. You know, a character being hypnotized and subsequently transformed? I would even go so far as ro say that actually the muscle growth and jockification stories so prevalent today are derivative of furry transformation, seeing how old most furry websites are.

However, the issue emerges when the furry transformation genre, a combination which is even more niched than the Furry and the Hypnoais subculture by itself uncombined, is present in the larger community. In this site (sites?) for example, the main theme here is “Mind Control” and “Hypnosis”. The Main Audience here comes for mind control stories, not a furry one. It thusly explains how Furry stories might turn away a certain number of readers here even if it includes mind control. They come for the latter and not the former.

Werewolves are andromorphic, thus a furry. Vampires are not. They are essentially just humans with hypnotic power, ie perfectly fitting the appeal of mind control and hypnosis people are going for here.

So, in short. People come here for either mind control or transformation. The proportion that comes for mind control is more prevalent than transformation. And even within the subset of people coming for transformation, some are turned away by furry aspects that vampires do not possess.

Now, personally, I adore a specific aspect of Werewolf stories being the spreadibg of werewolf infection. The inner interplay between already transformed members would interest me rest. Good stories are still good stories though, and I love reading them as much as the next person.

I’ve posted my next chapter for the Mondjugen pack series (ideally will be posted tomorrow… if the moderator Gods are kind).

Regarding furries, it is my view that werewolves and furries are adjacent fandoms, but they’re not the same thing. Werewolves originate from horror, while furries are friendly (I acknowledge that the furry fandom has grown and now features erotica, so there is now overlap). But just because a wolf has hair and has some humanoid qualities does not a furry make.

That’s why I view werewolf worlds were the werewolf keeps their human personality all the time… it just does not work for me. An important part of the horror aspect is that the wolf takes over completely (and that’s what I’ve incorporated into my stories).

I’ve always view vampires as a reflection of humans’ obsession with death, and werewolves as the reflection of humans’ obsession with sex/nature/violence.

As a fellow author and, ahem, enjoyer of werewolf stories, I think that part of the exhaustion is actually reaction to the broad popularity of the genre and especially its place as the origin of the Omegaverse style of fiction. I think that werewolf stories kind of came up with vampire fiction, which has a thicker spine of literary origin to work with because of Bram Stoker and vampire horror films, and a later wave of fur-versus-fang style stories that got romantic or erotic spinoffs. The most famous of which, of course, is Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight stories.

I definitely agree with your take that vampires and werewolves in the romance/erotic context are reflecting different things - a great Tumblr meme I saw a while ago on the topic was something like “do you want go be enthralled in bottomless, sensuous passion that consumes your whole world, or do you want ravishing, primal connection that strips away the pretenses of civilization to embrace your animal nature? I can’t choose for you.”

Obviously, in my mind, werewolf lore being loose and flexible gives a lot of freedom of maneuver in recomposing that idea in different directions (i.e. Omegaverse). The masculinity and sexuality of it is why I think it took off as a major genre in queer literature the way that it did. Some people prefer other kinds of sensuality, some people think fantasy stories are silly and/or childish, and some people are just boorish and can’t articulate why they like or dislike a thing without referencing its popularity. The first group are fine; the rest bore me.

First: happy update → Chapter 5 of ‘Mondjugen - Pack’ is now posted on GSS. I hope you all enjoy: ‘CH 5 - Big Things’ by Rock Creek Werewolf - Gay Spiral Stories

Werewolf lit in eBooks (Amazon, etc.) is primarily, if not exclusively Alpha/Omega MPreg. I don’t knock anyone for their kinks, but MPreg is rarely my cup of tea, and I wish the two genres (ww and MPreg) were not so joined at the hip.

I’m reading Kiki Clark’s ‘Kinkaid Pack’ series, which I find to be pretty good. It’s more queer-leaning than gay man (again, to each his own, just stating my preferences) but it’s well written enough to keep me going. She features the pack in a giant mansion with more security personnel/equipment than Camp David and the White House combined. Funny how werewolves either live in abject rural poverty or in rich gated splendor. There can be no in-between

Question for the group: biped or quadruped? You must choose one.

Quadruped for me, they gotta be able to be wolves for realsies sometimes. Maybe massive bear-sized wolves that can tear a car apart with their jaws or something, but wolves. Though I don’t mind the idea of a wolfman with a huge cock, as a reader and an author

I, ironically, love mpreg but am completely meh on omegaverse implementation of it - it feels mostly like a dom/sum or humiliation kink, or a simple replication of heterosexuality when practiced in gay erotica. Boring.

I do also think it’s hilarious that the class signifiers of werewolves are almost always “poor, rural” but if that’s not easily imagined as sexy by the author they’re immediately secretive billionaires with chains in the basement instead.

I won’t yuck your yum. I’ve enjoyed some MPreg. ‘Project Re: Genesis’ comes to mind (involving abduction and enslavement by a hive-type society of all-male alien ants ( ‘Project RE:GENESIS’ by Ethan White - Gay Spiral Stories.

I agree: the MPreg aspect of most werewolve erotica is distinctly “female writing gay erotica,” and inserting feminine/submissive qualities to the sub / omega. On Amazon, it feels basically obligatory. Again, not trying to say anothers kink is bad (and these books are POPULAR), but it is not the only perspective. I’m trying (with the Mondjugen series) to express a gay male werewolf pack with gay mens’ sexual habits (multiple partners, close couples that are still open, shifting dynamics of fidelity). Plus adding increased libidos (because we’re all here to have fun-fun-FUN!

I’m also in the quadruped school. It does not have to be a carbon copy of a real wolf (a la ‘Twilight’ or ‘True Blood’). I felt ‘Being Human’ (BBC and SciFi) both did a good job with their werewolf depiction. I’m partial to the BBC version, because it was inherently better written and funnier; they also wisely kept the werewolf (physically a mix of puppets, masks, and props to ensure werewolf silhouette), largely in shadow or in glimpses, as opposed to ScyFy’s full on GCI version. Few things are as satisfying as what is in your own minds’ eye (take the hint, people who post pics on this site!).

I’m curious if others may want to contribute. Why you do / do not like the ww genre?

If i may share my earliest brush with werewolf fetish, I would cite reading New Moon (Twilight Saga) where Jacob cuts his hair short and joins Sam’s pack. There is something erotic about turning from disliking someone into being their “subservient bro” in such a short amount of time. That is how I developed my kink for werewolves, i think. I would say that the horror of the pack dynamic bleeding into human forms and lives is more of a horror than merely the wolf takibg over suring transformed period.

I still insist that it is the nonhuman element that may turn some people away from werewolf stories, and the same does not apply to vampires.

I am currently on chapter three of your first series, and I am loving it! The way the chief of police goes from denial and grsfually grows into a full member of the pack is do well done and dark. I love how upon transformation, the wolves, howevr resistant before, become fully loyal to the alpha. Cant belive I slept on the sotry before. I hope to catch up to the current chapter soon.

Bipedal or quadrupedal? Why not both?

I personally cannot get into MPreg… It took away from the masculine fantasy of males fucking casually without consequences. I also do not find humiliation hot, so a character in a completdly submissive role like an omega does not appeal to me. I prefer that the subservient character be something along the linr of a loyal mook or a buff henchman more appealing. That us why I do not find omegaverse. It greatly limits the pool of werewolf erotica for me

I’m glad you’re enjoying ‘Mondjudgen.’ Many more chapters to come!

I’m glad you enjoy the mental transformation as much as the physical. I want to explore the way their morals / allegiances / instincts change (consciously or unconsciously). In my view, it’s much more powerful when it’s a COMPLETE change of the individual instead of “gee, I’m a ww once a month, but still have to go to high school.”

I agree. The Omegaverse is bascially 90% of all werewolf fiction available (as always, not yucking others’ yum, but it does not appeal to at least some).

Along with my avoidance of MPreg, I’m also avoiding some usual terminology. I’m specifically NOT using the word ‘shifter,’ for example. That, to me, denotes an exact definition (we know what we are). My characters don’t know. I consciously set it up as a "no one knows how this all started, and we’re just trying to survive it,’ which ideally makes it more compelling, along with “let’s fuck around and find out.”

For my part, I think part of the antipathy some people have towards werewolves is born of the oversaturation we had of urban fantasy and paranormal romance, particularly YA flavors of those genres, from the mid 2000s to the early 2010s.

I also think it’s a power fantasy thing: most gay men would rather live forever, be fabulously wealthy, and have vast social, political, and supernatural power than… turn into a dog and develop a silver allergy.

But for me, who is one of those people whose fascination with MC comes from “I would like someone to turn my brain off and tell me what to do” due to a very active brain, werewolves offer a variation on the dumbing-down/himbo fantasy, with more masculine sensuality thrown in.

I agree; vampires provide the more attractive lifestyle to some. But I (and more than a few of us, I hope) prefer the latter.

Favorite werewolf film?
